Every business needs a logo that is memorable. A logo tells customers why they should choose your business over the competition (and yes the competition is steep these days). You want a logo that is inviting, interesting, and noteworthy. All the while, you want to make sure that your logo isn’t overly busy.  The concept must remain simple and the design should be free of distractions.

Complex logos always have the potential to be beautiful, but there’s a reason that the saying “less is more” continues to thrive. By leveraging minimalism and clear imagery, it’s possible to improve brand recognition. Winning logo design can elevate your brand and turbocharge your most vital piece of brand messaging.

Here are two of our favorite Los Angeles logo designs from the city. These designs highlight some of LA’s strengths and give viewers an idea of what Los Angeles really stands for.

City of Los Angeles Logo Design

The city of Los Angeles has had many different logo design iterations over the years, but most commonly stick with an emblem. When they want to use the Los Angeles name, they tend to choose whatever colors and font styles best suit the occasion. It’s an interesting way to treat a logo, which typically comes with strict usage guidelines. The lack of consistency only works in this instance because the city has plenty of other reasons for attracting tourists.  It’s arguably an insignificant (and equally overlooked) detail for a city with a population of over 4 million.

As far as the technical analysis goes, the emblem would actually qualify as a crest. We have a nice, classic serif font face on display with some trusted imagery throughout.  Despite a few of these understandable decisions, however, there’s no question that it’s a busy design. If you were to minimize the logo, you’d be sure to run into readability issues. This logo is also quite outdated in terms of style.

Overall, the city of Los Angeles could use an updated concept to share with faculty, third-party events, and visitors. The crest uses far too many colors while attempting to include everything but the kitchen sink.  We have the United States of America flag, the California flag, and a host of California crops. It also includes a rosary, which symbolizes the historical Spanish missionaries that came through the city.  This is a prime example of attempting to do too much with a limited amount of space.

If Los Angeles wants to keep the seal, it would be nice to settle on a uniform/neutral color palette with a graphic that revolves around 1 or 2 of the aforementioned elements. Another approach would be to focus on just the city name, which would then become easier to include within different marketing campaigns.

Los Angeles Creative Culture and Business Logo

Los Angeles was designated a new logo in 2017 specifically for the creative culture and businesses in the city. The logo was designed as part of a campaign to support Los Angeles based startups. The logo was designed in such a way that other creative businesses and artists could add their own images to it.

When you look at the original design, you can see “LA” but the long line of the “L” is where other artists, designers, and creative brands can insert custom images to make the logo their own. It was created in celebration for the thriving arts community in Los Angeles. The logo was also used to create some new products for Los Angeles creatives.  Phone cases, water bottles, skateboards, and candles are just a few of the new product types being sold with the logo. This was a cool way to pay homage to the city’s bustling creative center and draw attention to aspiring startups and businesses.

Los Angeles Hollywood Sign

This may not qualify as a typical “logo,” but we had to mention the famous Hollywood sign. It is often used as an unofficial logo by businesses selling Los Angeles and Hollywood themed merchandise along the boulevard.

The Hollywood sign consists of huge block letters and is in all white. The letters are up on a hill overlooking Hollywood Boulevard and have become ubiquitous with the search for stardom in Los Angeles. The sign symbolizes the entertainment industry and has become a recognizable landmark in LA, home of the entertainment industry.

You can visit the Hollywood sign by going on one of several hikes that take you up through the Los Angeles mountains. You won’t be able to get right next to the sign, but you can absolutely get close. This makes for a great photo op moment.
